REVIEW

2RRR Arts & Tarts

with Margie Mason.

22/04/2024.

“Saturday’s Emperor concert was a success in every way.

Young conductor Luke Spicer had an appealing personality - at times when he interacted with the audience - and his confident handling of the entire program - including a large choir - was thrilling to observe.

Of course Willoughby Symphony Orchestra is a world-class ensemble, with over 50 years of music making.

This program continued their practice of supporting up-and-coming composers … and Ray Lin’s Voyage Of The Silk Road was triumphantly applauded by the audience … with its timely theme of communication between East and West, evoking the mystery and fascinating history of this ancient trade route.

But for me the highlight was Winnie Su playing the magnificent Piano Concerto No.5 in E Flat Major, by Beethoven.

Last Tuesday I had the pleasure of interviewing this brilliant young musician, on my Arts and Tarts program on 2rrr.
I further enjoyed observing her Master Class of helping young piano players on Wednesday, where it was obvious that her musical knowledge and extraordinary technique - in Mozart Debussy etc - ensure she will continue to have international recognition and success.

With conductor and orchestra in perfect communication … Winnie played this wonderful concerto with poise and passion. The famous melodies came across, her stunning mastery of every aspect of performance appearing effortless and elegant.

We were privileged to be audience members at this unforgettable musical event in Sydney.”
